The Essential Art of Being of Value
Taking ownership of the value that you add to a group is essential to the well-being of that group, and by extension, valuing the contribution of each member of the team is equally important. Every team member brings a bit of their own expertise and uniqueness to the mix. The best leaders highlight and celebrate that uniqueness and the best team players celebrate and support the success of each member of the team. Every member of a team, whether of a personal team such as your family, or an organizational business team, is a community building block.
Think of it this way. If you committed to stacking a handful of Legos and then pulled one Lego out from the bottom of what you built, what would happen to the entire group of Legos? Every member of any team needs to not only understand their value, but exemplify and lead with it while also displaying a willingness to learn from and share the brilliance of all members of the team. It is through this openness and reciprocity that relationships and businesses flourish.
The puzzle cannot be completed without all the pieces co-existing and enhancing one another. So, what is your value-add? Here are 3 questions to support you in illuminating your personal or professional contribution to the relationships in your life:
- How am I being memorable? If you strive to leave people and situations better than you found them, you will intuitively and organically demonstrate your worth. Literally ask yourself, “How and where can I be of service, where can I be useful and successful?”
- What is my expertise, and am I leading with that? Instead of being a Jane-of-all-trades, zero in on where your experience brings significance to the company or the team.
- Where and how can my curiosity enable innovation and drive solutions? Bypassing the problem in favor of testing the solution is one significant way in which you can impact decision-making and drive growth.
